The opening riff of this song was my first introduction to the wah-wah pedal. It was love at first listen and I would've been satisfied if the song ended before it even really began. It is thick.
The song is big and heavy and full of ruckus; the sonic equivalent of a hard-learned lesson in Judo. It pulls you in with this tantalizing riff and has you running full tilt toward it - then it grabs you by the collar and hurtles you through space as Jimi systematically chops away at the trunk of everything you hold dear with an open-E chord that resonates in your genitals.
That's rock n' roll.
