Last weekend's Home County Folk Festival was an absolute treat. While we were a little bummed that we couldn't make it out for Joel Plaskett, Peter Elkas, Elliot Brood, and Matthew Barber (among others) we were lucky enough catch two amazing free performances by none other than Jill Barber and Danny Michel.
If you've got the chance to see either of these musicians play live: bring as many friends as you can to the show. You won't be disappointed.
Jill's music is a throwback to a day when songs were meant to be sung and danced to under the stars. Far from being overly sentimental or sappily nostalgic, her music sounds as fresh and true today as if Guy Lombardo and the Royal Canadians were still a radio staple.
The best part of the show had to be when she dedicated "Old Flame" to the late-great Embassy Hotel (which, you guessed it, has burnt down since Jill last visited London).
Though this performance isn't from Home County, it is recent and a great taste of what you can expect when she and her band of "men in nice suits" come strolling through your town.
Danny's set on Saturday night was equally impressive and I'm looking forward to catching him again when he's back in town playing the London Music Club on September 18th.
Thanks to the promoters of Home County for throwing a stellar party this year....looking forward to 2010's edition already.
p.s. If anybody has actual footage from these two performances online anywhere - let me know as I'd love to link up to it.
